30 Day Writing Challenge - Day 10

Day 10: You find a basket on your front porch and...

A loud knock served as my alarm. I glanced at the still dark sky and groaned. Whoever is knocking better need medical help. I muttered a curse as I staggered down the hall, another loud knock echoing in the pre-dawn stillness.

I looked through the peephole. No one. Still, someone had tried to reach me here so I opened the door. The street beyond was completely empty. Not even a stray cat. I shrugged the whole experience off as a juvenile prank and noticed a blanket-covered basket on the step. Weird. I hadn’t ordered anything and wouldn’t have expected it to be delivered in a basket in any case. I bent down to get a closer look and the blanket twitched as if something underneath were trying to stay still but couldn’t. I narrowed my eyes, then glanced up and down the street again.A low humming sound floated up from the basket. I held my breath. Do I dare? If I don’t, what would happen? Well, I’d live the rest of my days completely content in my ignorance. And if I did chance a peek under that blanket, I might regret it forever. But then again, maybe not. I sighed and rolled my eyes. Curiosity won the debate and I gingerly pinched the edge of the blanket then pulled it back to reveal absolutely nothing.

Empty.
