30 Day Writing Challenge - Day 15

Day 15: You find a new key on your keychain. What does it unlock?

Today is weird. It didn’t start out that way, though. I woke up, took a shower, ate breakfast. Then it got weird. I grabbed my keys, completely prepared to have an ordinary day and noticed a new key on my keychain. Dangling so innocently, yet filling me with dread. I mean, keys don’t just appear out of the blue. Now I sit on my couch where I landed when my knees gave out, turning the key over and over as I wrack my brain for an answer. Nothing. Replay yesterday’s events but all was normal. And last night’s activities were just as mundane.

So then.

The key itself gave no hints whatsoever of its origin. The only thing I knew for sure was that it would unlock something. But what? Door? Padlock? The chains of a hideous monster in an evil lair? Okay so probably not the last one. I could just shrug this off as a random act of ridiculosity but a small voice in the back of my mind urged me to dig deeper, look harder. But should I? What if I found something illegal? What if I unlocked a door best left locked? What if I unlocked all my buried secrets and didn’t like what I found? Too many what ifs for my taste.

The key was just a key, nothing more.
